Scope and Contents
The John Brannon Correspondence collection (1982-1992, bulk 1982-1984) contains correspondence sent to John Brannon largely centered on his influential Detroit-based hardcore band Negative Approach, with additional materials relating to his subsequent post-punk outfit Laughing Hyenas. The correspondence encompasses fan mail, tour booking and merch distribution logistics, zine interviews and editorial requests, and personal correspondence. The collection tracks Brannon’s musical activities from roughly 1981 to 1995 and the circuits of communication and promotion through which the American hardcore subculture grew, reproduced itself, and forged affective attachments and identities amongst its audiences and participants.

Biographical / Historical
Negative Approach was an influential band in the hardcore scene due to Brannon’s intense and aggressive stage presence and their innovative sound which melded a range of influences, including the Stooges and Detroit proto-punk, hardcore bands such as Black Flag and Necros, and British Oi! bands. The band released two EPs and one album on Tesco Vee’s Touch and Go label and toured with Meatmen and Necros in 1981, which solidified their position as a staple of Midwestern hardcore. Negative Approach dissolved in 1984, and Brannon formed The Laughing Hyenas with Larissa Stolarchukin in 1985, with whom he toured and recorded until the mid-1990s.
