Biographical / Historical

The Monument Quilt Project collected 3,000 stories by survivors of sexual and intimate partner violence and allies around the world in the form of quilt squares that were sewn together to create 750 8’x8′ quilts. The fiftieth and final display of these quilts was on the National Mall in Washington, DC in 2019. FORCE: Upsetting Rape Culture, an art and activist collective founded in 2010 by and for survivors of sexual violence, conducted this project. FORCE is an intersectional, LGBTQ-focused, multicultural, pro-black, and anti-racist collective based in Baltimore and Mexico City. Through their public art, resources, and organizing strategies, they strove to have a local and global impact by disrupting rape culture, changing social attitudes about sexual consent and violence, and connecting these shifts to policy change. In 2021, FORCE ceased active programming and turned its attention to archiving the Monument Quilt Project. FORCE seeks to find a home for every piece of the Monument Quilt.
