Scope and Contents

Scrapbook of Kathryn Elizabeth Yohn (née Altemeier), class of 1928, documenting her time at Cornell University. Materials date from 1924-1928. Includes correspondence, news clippings, event and performance programs, photographs, athletics tickets and programs, and other ephemera. Scrapbook begins with three pages titled “My Pals,” where Yohn’s Cornell friends wrote their names, hometown, the date, and a short note. The third page has additional names and notes written on the back. Correspondence documents Yohn’s social life at Cornell and includes her letter of election to the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority; a letter from the Office of the Dean of Women confirming her appointment as president of the Alpha Omicron Pi house for the academic year 1927-1928; invitations to birthday parties, fraternity and sorority parties, performances, the Freshman Banquet (May 12, 1925), dances, tea, and other sorority functions; Valentine’s Day cards; Christmas cards; and a letter from R. W. “Bob” Baker asking Yohn out on a date.

News clippings include coverage of sledding at Beebe Lake; the total solar eclipse of January 24, 1925, including images of the eclipse and an article from the New York Herald Tribune; Freshman gray cap burning; the contest for selecting the “Venetian Knight” during the Spring Day carnival (1925); Spring Day Gala Ball; a lecture by explorer Richard E. Byrd at Bailey Hall on March 28, 1927 where he discussed his expedition to the North Pole (includes ticket stub); and athletics including football, baseball, and the Women’s Athletic Association.

Event programs are from concerts and performances on- and off-campus. On-campus events performances include the Cornell Dramatic Club’s productions of “The Wash Tub” (1925, includes ticket stub) and a dance performance featuring Adolph Bolm, Ruth Page, and Maria Montero (1926); “Alice in Wonderland” presented by the women of the Class of 1928; the Department of Physical Education’s Dance Festival (1925, 1926, 1927); the “Christening of Princess Cornellia,” presumably a comedy skit (1925); Sophomore Cotillion (1925); Paul Whiteman and his Concert Orchestra at Bailey Hall (April 28, 1925); the Spring Day Hop (May 22, 1925 and May 21, 1926); Program of Kermis Plays for 1926: “Finding a Way Out” and “Amends” (February 12, 1926); a “Junior-Freshman Christening” in “the Baptistry of St. Willard” (Willard Straight Hall), likely a comedic performance; Cornell Glee, Banjo, and Mandolin Clubs Annual Senior Week Concert (1926); and the Athletic Conference of American College Women (ACACW) Official Program and Banquet at Cornell (1927). Programs for off-campus events include the Cornell Women’s Dramatic Club performance of “The Dragon” at the Lyceum Theater in Ithaca (May 9, 1925); a charity performance of “Juanita” at the Lyceum Theater (1926); and the Savage Club of Ithaca performance of “Five Bewildered Freshmen” (May 19, 1927).

Photographs in the scrapbook depict Yohn; members of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority; campus buildings; athletics events including the Cornell vs. Columbia football game (November 11, 1924) and rowing; and a party for women from the Class of 1928.

Athletics materials present include a Williams vs. Cornell football ticket stub (October 10, 1924); Rutgers vs. Cornell football ticket stub (October 18, 1925); Columbia vs. Cornell football program and ticket stub (November 1, 1924); a Winter Sports Season ticket valid for admission to all home basketball, wrestling, hockey, fencing, and lacrosse games and matches; Yale vs. Cornell Dual Track Meet program and ticket stubs (March 21, 1925); and Michigan vs. Cornell Track Meet (March 27, 1926).

Additional ephemera in the scrapbook include small dolls made from fabric, wire, and clothespins and associated with Yohn’s sorority activities, including a “Doll Cabaret” performance given on October 7, 1925; Alpha Omicron Pi Initiation Banquet programs for 1925, 1926, and 1927; ribbons and pieces of fabric; tally cards from bridge games; a pennant reading “B-A-N-G”; St. Patrick’s Day Formal dinner napkin or place mat; lace with pressed flower and ribbon; a permission slip allowing Yohn to be absent from her dorm overnight; Class of 1928 Memorial Fund donation slip; name tags from various events; and Women’s Self Government Association (WSGA) ephemera.
