Gay art and erotica, 48 examples of gay pictorial culture, 1890s-1930s; 1955-1957; 1980-1992
Scope and Contents
The 1980s and 1990s witnessed an explosion of gay art in museums and galleries, as illustrated by this collection of above-ground, elite presentations of gay art. The collection is not comprehensive, and it is New York-focused. Still, it shows the variety of work and venues, and it highlights the major presence of figurative and representational art in both paintings and photographs. Materials are roughly grouped as follows. (1) Fifteen reproductions of paintings and art photography (2) Thirty-two exhibit brochures and catalogues (3) Forty-eight examples of gay pictorial culture.
