Valentine Seaman, MD Collection

Abstract

Valentine Seaman was born in Queens County in New York in 1770 and became a doctor in 1792. Seaman is most remembered for his public health work, specifically the introduction of smallpox vaccines and his work mapping yellow fever outbreaks in New York City at the end of the 18th century. This collection is comprised of two of Seaman’s personal documents and two published writings.

Vincent du Vigneaud, PhD Papers

Abstract

Dr. Vincent du Vigneaud served as the chair of Cornell University Medical College’s Department of Biochemistry from 1938-1967. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for landmark research in sulfur compounds and the first synthesis of oxytocin in 1955, and later successfully synthesized penicillin with his colleagues. The Vincent du Vigneaud, PhD Papers contain correspondence, administrative documents, research files, reprints, and other records related to his career and research.

Scope and Contents The McDermott Collection is made up of four separate series: office and personal files (Boxes 1-16), memo books and calendars (Boxes 17 and 18), awards and memorabilia (Boxes 19 and 20) and correspondence files (Boxes 21-49). The material within each series represents a wide variance of dates, some of the items going back to the Thirties and Forties, most of them pertaining to events of the late Sixties and Seventies, up to the time of Dr. McDermott's death in 1981.
