Scope and Contents

This collection includes the papers that Frederick C. Fletcher removed when he sold the mill. They included extensive correspondence and purchasing records for both companies.

Also included is correspondence between William Halliwell agent for the Lawton Spinning Company and Caitlin & Company.

Biographical / Historical

The Pocasset Worsted Company was established in Thornton, Rhode Island in 1897 by Charles Fletcher and his youngest son, Frederick C. Fletcher. It began with 10,000 spindles and employed 200. In 1903, the Pocasset Combing Company was incorporated with Charles Fletcher as President and Frederick C. Fletcher as Treasurer. It had six combs and fifty employees. After 1909 Pocasset Combing was no longer listed in the directories. In the same year, however, Pocasset Worsted was incorporated and enlarged. In the 1920s, Frederick C. Fletcher sold the mill.

Biographical / Historical

The Lawton Spinning Company incorporated in 1898 and operated 80,000 spindles. It was also owned by Frederick C. Fletcher when the records in this collection were created. The company closed in 1934.
