Content Description
Materials created and collected by American environmentalist Rafe Pomerance in the course of his work as a climate change leader and activist between 1973 and 2020. The collection contains original documents, reprints, reports, research notes and articles, correspondence, and other materials relating to his activities and roles held over the span of his career. Subjects covered include documentation of his work to bring the issue of climate change to the attention of member of Congress, the administration, and the press; research and documentation on acid rain; his work on amendments to the Clean Air Act; documentation of key congressional hearings including an original report on Sen. John Chafee’s 1986 Climate hearings and others focused on climate change and depletion of the ozone layer; materials on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the negotiation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change; his work as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment and Development 1993-1999, including negotiation of the Kyoto Protocol; his research, writings, and participation in Arctic 21, a DC-based network devoted to communicating the impacts of climate change in the Arctic; geoengineering research; strategy development highlighting the local impacts of climate change to drive policy; advocacy for the establishment or Advance Research Projects-Energy; campaign related material, including more than three decades of organizing in Florida; work to develop a viable cap and trade system; materials related to the publication of Losing Earth: A Recent History (McMillan, 2019), and the 2020 establishment of a political action committee in Florida.

Biographical / Historical
Rafe Pomerance is an American environmentalist. He graduated from Cornell in 1968 with a B.A. in History. In 1972 he began working for the Urban Environment Conference. In 1975 he joined Friends of the Earth and later became its president until 1984. From 1986-1993, he served as a Senior Associate at the World Resources Institute where he focused on scientific and policy issues associated with global climate change and ozone depletion. In June of 1993, he was appointed as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Environment and Development.
