Content Description
The Theresa Alt Tompkins County Campaigns and elections collection documents the political action and activism of Theresa Alt (b. 1943), dating from 1982-2010. The collection contains election and campaign files in Tompkins County, NY, including candidate literature, instructions, and rules, lists of volunteers, voters and petitions, newspaper clippings, memoranda, correspondence, handwritten notes, annotated material, related primarily to Democratic Party candidates, as well as the Working Families Party, the Green Party, and a few opposition candidates. Election and campaign files are associated with the Democratic committees of Tompkins County, the City of Ithaca, and the Ward. The collection also includes campaign material from the Jesse Jackson presidential campaign (1988) and files from School Board elections (1986-2010).

Biographical / Historical
Theresa Alt (b. 1943) is a political activist located in Ithaca, NY, a long-time Tompkins County Workers Center (TCWC) Member Leader, Secretary of Ithaca Democratic Socialists of America, housing activist, and official Rental Housing Advisory Commission member. She grew up outside Washington, DC, and moved to Ithaca, NY, in 1976. She also lived in Poland, the Soviet Union, and Yugoslavia. She holds a Ph.D. in Slavic Linguistics from Columbia University. She was a Democratic candidate for the elections of the Commons Council (1994) and served as Mayor Nichols’ administrative assistant for 5 years (1987). She hosted the WRFI Community Radio broadcast, “The Inquiring Socialist” (2020-2022), and took leadership in the progressive cable access show, DSA Presents.
