Content Description

Prints, drawings, and photographs from the Dante collection which were matted for the exhibition Visions of Dante, shown at the Johnson Art Museum in the Fall of 2021. Included are 19th-century drawings and prints illustrating the Divina commedia, including a pen and ink drawing by Felice Giani, two engravings by Joseph Anton Koch, and 8 other prints by an unknown artist; and images of Dante in popular culture, including portraits of him by Joannes Stradanus (Jan van der Straet), D. Henriet (after Delacroix), and Gustave Dore, as well as photographs of monuments to him in Florence and Trento. Also includes 34 original and very fine drawings illustrating Dante's Inferno by Utica, NY-based artist Bob Cimbalo.

Conditions Governing Use

Box 4 contains drawings that are not fully fixed, meaning they continue to smudge with pressure. The drawings are interleaved with non-acidic paper. The drawings and their interleaving should remain in their current order. Patrons should only handle the edges of each drawing, turning each page one at a time with both hands.
