Biographical / Historical

John D'Emilio (born 1948) is a professor emeritus of history and of women's and gender studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he taught 1999-2014. He first taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1983-1993). He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1982.

In 1989, he joined the Advisory Committee for Cornell's new Human Sexuality Collection and helped shape its direction and success. He served as Founding Director of the Policy Institute at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force (now named the National LGBTQ Task Force) from 1995 to 1997. He was a National Endowment for the Humanities fellow in 1997 and a Guggenheim fellow in 1998.

Among his publications are Intimate Matters: A History of Sexuality in America [with Estelle Freedman], Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin; Queer Legacies: Stories from Chicago's LGBTQ Archives; and two important collections of essays: Making Trouble: "Essays on Gay History, Politics, and the University", and "The World Turned: Essays on Gay History, Politics, and Culture".
