Scope and content

Scrapbook includes receipts for registration and fees to Cornell, many newspaper clippings, some from local papers like the Ithaca Democrat, many related to politics, obituaries for his father William J. Harding, a note indicating that Harding was the first individual from Sullivan County to complete four years, one indicating Harding received a scholarship, some poems. A campus resolution and clippings discussing town and gown relations and an altercation from February 23, 1880 between village roughs and Cornell students in disrupting a disreputable female minstrel show. Electoral ballots and material relating to Grover Cleveland and the 1884 Presidential election. Wedding announcement from June 15, 1886 and Cornell commencement announcement for June 17, 1886. Ithaca Hotel, Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen, Maid of the Mist, Binghamton, N.Y. advertising. Steamer Daniel Drew menu, University Sermon announcement for Edward Everett Hale, 1881. Class supper, banquet, class day exercises ephemera. Programs and tickets for various shows, Woodford Orations, Albany Law School 1883 commencement. Also includes a speech on the Civil War; comic postcards from publisher M.F. Tobin: An antisemitic comic featuring the caricature of a Jewish tailor flattering a customer into making a sale and a diptych of an elated man (“My Wife has got a Baby.”) and a resentful man (“Now I find it’s a false alarm...”); note about a fine of $15 for horn blowing; class of 1906 production of Those Dreadful Twins, from “directoress” Harriette Hulse; various postcards of male/female couples: nautical, pastoral themes. 1881 Class Statistics, including the 74 men and 13 women’s stance on Co-Education.

Biographical / Historical

Attended Cornell from Callicoon Center, New York. Cornell University Class of 1881, BS in Science and Letters. He later went to the Albany Law School at the time part of Union University, graduating in 1883.
