Keeton received his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago; his M.S. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute (1956) and a Ph.D. from Cornell University (1958). He was an internationally known authority on bird orientation and migration and his research spanned the fields of entomology, taxonomy, evolutionary theory, and the homing behavior of pigeons.
