Biographical / Historical

FIGHT (Freedom, Independence, God, Honor, Today) was a community organization founded in 1965 after the 1964 riots in Rochester, N.Y. It successfully agitated for change in hiring practices, living conditions, and other issues. FIGHT leaders also successfully prevented additional civil unrest in Rochester when rioting occurred in other northern cities in the 1960s. The Rev. Franklin D. Florence, a friend of Malcolm X, served as the face and voice of the organization and its first president, working closely with the controversial social activist, Saul Alinsky.
