Scope and content

World Wars I and II photographs, dated and labeled in French, document a wide range of activities—from battlefronts and war camps to diplomatic visits and civilian life in both wars. Series I. World War I (1914-1921) features images of Belgian and French soldiers and civilians, Japanese forces in Nice, several photographs of war camps and battlefronts, the German army, civilians, and Allied Forces in Germany, as well as British refugees in Russia (1918), and photographs from the US and Italy. Notable photographs include Ambassador Herrick’s visit to an American hospital in Paris. Series II. World War II (1943-1944) includes photographs from 1943-1944, capturing bombed cities, children in hospitals and shelters, military parades, and wartime industry (including tank construction). Highlights include Philippe Herriot’s funeral, a group photograph with Edith Piaf, and a broadcast text by Eelco N. van Kleffens, the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the Netherlands’ foreign policy. This collection contains graphic images of war and may be disturbing. Viewer discretion is advised. Several photographs include copyright and usage stamps from Underwood and Underwood, New York (1881-early 1940s), reflecting the company’s original publication practices.
