Andrew Dickson White teaching collection

 Collection — Box: 1
Identifier: 8928

Content Description

A teaching collection assembled by A.D. White about the medieval Church and the Lutheran Reformation. Contains 37 items, including four indulgences, the oldest being issued in 1259; a famous anti-Catholic print by the Lutheran artist Erhard Schön (1491-1542), titled "Klage Gottes über seinen Weinberg"; photographic image (printed on paper) titled, "Buddha as a Christian Saint at Palermo"; and the original porfolio case A.D. White used to carry materials to the classroom, which contains a list of items in his own handwriting. This material is a unique example of a small teaching collection with a selection of textual and visual materials ready for a class or a research seminar; it is an early example of how history was taught at Cornell in the 19th century. The archival documents themselves would be of interest to students and researchers in History, German studies, Religious Studies, as well as anyone interested in Cornell's early history.
