Content Description
Approximately 150 flyers, zines, documents, and other pieces of ephemera tracing the history of hardcore punk through its 1980s network of bands, venues, record labels, radio stations, and underground publications that linked hyper-local scenes throughout the United States and internationally to form a broader subculture. The collection features many of the genre’s defining bands, including Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Black Flag, Fugazi, Necros, and Negative Approach, as well as acts largely unknown outside of their local scenes. Activity in the hardcore punk community is documented in U.S. cities like Washington, D.C., New York, and Detroit, along with centers of regional activity such as California, Ohio, and the Midwest. Also represented are the independent record labels that released hardcore music, such as Dischord, SST, and Touch and Go, along with DIY venues like D.C.’s Wilson Center and New York’s A7 club, which provided important alternative spaces where the hardcore community gathered.
