Many of the implements of war, and the emblems of religious worship illustrating the arts of the ancient pre-historic (anti- Columbian) races of North America were taken form the aboriginal [...] and mounds with my own hands. All the objects described in this catalogue, were either obtained during my explorations and [...], or were directly purchased from their original discoverer and owner. In these instances I have given to the objects these names which best described their origin use [...]", September 6th, 1888
