Series contains clippings and ephemera related to student life at Cornell. Of note are materials from a contest to elect the “Venetian Knight,” an honorary position during the Spring Day carnival in May 1925. That year’s Spring Day festivities featured an evening carnival titled “So This is Venice!” themed after the Italian city. The individual elected as Venetian Knight would preside over this carnival. Unusually, the candidates for Venetian Knight were faculty members rather than students. The series includes a photograph of a rally likely held in support of one candidate, law professor Lyman P. Wilson. One of the photographs depicts rally participants wearing white Ku Klux Klan hoods and robes and is captioned “Wilson is a great favorite endorsed by the Klan.” While the Klan had a presence in Ithaca around the time that the photograph was taken, the student dress and caption may not reflect formal ties to the organization. Also present is a postcard photograph of another rally in support of a candidate named Brown. Further Venetian Knight materials in this series include a handbill advertising the carnival; an admission ticket to the carnival, held on May 23, 1925; and a parody newspaper titled “the Venetian Knight Letter” published on the day of the carnival. Additional materials in this series include pamphlets and a clipping related to sorority life; a napkin from the Navy Day Ball on May 25, 1928; news clippings on student activities; and an itinerary of activities for an unspecified women’s group.
