Scope and Contents
Includes letter from Catherine discussing Quaker lodges in New York and their acceptance or denial of African American people. Some letters concern George Nash (then General Attorney of Ohio) and possible nonmarital child, the mother of whom was being cared for at a school by Anne Piper. A letter from M. Belle Nelson (February 23) describes the Five Points House of Industry. A letter from Carrie Lacy (August 16) asks for funding for poor African Americans and describes the changing local sentiment as a teacher for black youth. She also mentions her friendship with James Garfield and talks about his honest and fearless character. Mary Thomas writes asking if Harriet Tubman would be willing and able to travel with Elizabeth Comstock to distribute aid to refugees (December 4). Correspondents include Theodosia G. Chaplin, Phebe Coffin, Cornelia Hancock, Lydia King, Abby Munro (discussing mutual acquaintances and affairs), M. Belle Nelson, Mary Reed, and Sidney Taliaferro, among others. Also included is a pamphlet on the Concord Summer School of Philosophy.
