Scope and Contents

Scrapbook of Marilynn “Vickie” Woollatt Peckham, class of 1956, documenting her time at Cornell University. Materials date from 1952-1956. Includes newspaper clippings, programs, brochures, correspondence, and other ephemera. Personal materials of Peckham document her academics, sorority involvement, and social life on campus. Academics-related materials include her letter of admission to the New York State College of Home Economics (now the College of Human Ecology); freshman orientation week program; Cornell Freshman Camps brochure; Required Expenses for Women Students; letters informing her of her academic probation status and later restoration to good academic standing; grade reports for 1952-1956; penalization record for violating curfew; and student identification certificates from 1952-1956. The grade reports and student identification certificates are in an envelope taped to the inside of the front cover. Also present are materials related to Peckham’s membership in Alpha Omicron Pi, including her invitation to join, initiation banquet program, and other ephemera. Correspondence includes handwritten notes; get-well cards; and birthday cards. Materials documenting her social and personal life include a record of her stay in the Cornell Infirmary; invitations to events; restaurant menus; Cornell Dance Club ephemera; parody lyrics written by Peckham for a skit performed at a sorority party; an employment contract and brochure for Camp Kineowatha, where Peckham worked as a counselor in the summer of 1953.

Materials documenting the experiences of women on campus include Co-Ed’s Creed; dormitory regulations; a floor plan for Clara Dickson Hall; correspondence on the “Junior Grandmother” program; Cornell Women’s News; and 1954-55 Women’s Residential Halls informational booklet. Additional campus life materials include Frosh (Freshman) and Soph (Sophomore) newsletters; and the 1953 Frosh Register of students, with Peckham’s handwritten notes on individuals. News clippings document athletics; student activities; the annual Hotel Ezra Cornell conference; campus buildings, including a new recreation center and Anabel Taylor Hall; sorority activities including rushing and pledging; the death of Cornell trustee Robert E. Treman (1953); a jazz concert by Louis Armstrong in Bailey Hall (November 7, 1953); lectures by invited speakers; and a “Cornell Deadly Sin” parody newspaper making fun of Senator Joseph McCarthy. Also included are clippings related to the dismissal of six New York City college instructors for their refusal to answer questions on their political activities before the Senate Subcommittee on Internal Security (McCarran Committee); and clippings on the indictment of Cornell professor Marcus Singer for contempt of Congress by the House Un-American Activities Committee after he declined to answer questions related to his involvement with Communist-affiliated groups (1954). Further news clippings note the deaths of Cornell students Kenneth R. Bausch, Karl R. Schnepel, Franklyn Ellenbogan, James F. Hand, and Richard J. Conti, all in 1953.

Programs for on-campus events include Cornell University Theatre production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1952); CURW production “The Idiodyssey” (1952); Dartmouth and Cornell Glee Club Combined Concert (1952); Woody Herman “C’est La Vie” performance (1952); Cornell-Navy football game souvenir program (October 4, 1952); Octagon Productions “Don’t Forget to Write” (1953); Fall Fashion Show (1953); Sunday Afternoon Concert Series (1953); “This I Believe,” hosted by the Campus Conference on Religion (1953); “Concert in Dance” (1954); and Spring Day (1954). Also present is a Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus program.
