Scope and Contents
These images appeared at the end of Balog’s book, The Human Element (New York: Rizzoli International, 2021), which brought together stories of changing air, ice, and sea level into proximity with the children of the era. One image features his own daughter, Emily, age 11, holding a fragment of a retreating glacier in Iceland. These images acknowledge that children of Balog’s time, as well as all children, for all time, will be trapped in the consequences of environmental modification wrought by the societies before them.
