Scope and Contents
Driving through western South Dakota in 1982, Balog encountered land punctuated by chain link fence enclosures which looked distinctly out of place on the vast prairie. After learning that each enclosure protected an underground silo with an active intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), he photographed the environment between 1982 and 1985. Many hundreds of silos dotted the terrain. He was also able to photograph the interior of a silo at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, where Air Force officers practiced launch procedures. Many of these silos were decommissioned after the end of the Cold War.
