Biographical / Historical
Folder titles are the ones Pelzer gave to his original files, and often the names of the geographic locations he references, usually colonist in origin, are no longer recognized. In the case of this subseries, Truk Atoll refers to what is now called Chuuk Lagoon, a part of Chuuk State and the larger Caroline Islands group within the Federated States of Micronesia. The Caroline Islands now exist politically as 2 entities: the Republic of Palau and the Federated States of Micronesia. After the Second World War the Islands became trust territories of the United States (hence folders in this subseries that reference the "U.S. Central Carolines"). The Federated States of Micronesia gained independence in 1986, followed by Palau in 1994. In other, less frequent, cases of geographic name changes within this subseries, the current recognized name appears in brackets next to the name Pelzer used.
